The membership list is a private list that is separate from the email list. You must specially request to be on the membership list and you are required to share this information: name, address, and email address are required. Only people listed on the membership list have access to each other's names and addresses. The membership list is private and is not to be used or shared commercially. It exists to facilitate gift-giving, swaps, hearts and flowers, and other activities. If you wish to be on the membership list, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wa-state-quilters-membership and request to join the group. You will receive an email asking you for the following information before you are allowed to join:
Name (required)
Address (required)
Email address (required)
phone number
birthdate
fabric preferences or anything else you want to share about yourselfThe membership list is kept in the Database section of the wa-state-quilters-membership email list. Once accepted to the membership-list group, you can view other's information and easily change your own. Click on the "Database" link on the left hand side in the grey box. When the next page appears, click on the "WASIQ Membership List" link. Previous/Next goes to the previous next pages, and you can search using the text box on the right side of the screen, then clicking the "This Table" button.
SWAN stands for Swap Without A Name. The SWAN swap is a 12-month swap, starting in January. Each participant (2 a month) sends out a 12" square piece of fabric to each other swap participant. The others then construct a 12" finished block from the fabric and mail it back. We couldn't think of a good name for this particular ongoing swap and SWAN stuck.
There are twice weekly chat sessions. We use Yahoo's chat feature for these sessions. To join in on a chat, first go to the WASIQ Yahoo page, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wa-state-quilters/.
Next, click on the "Chat" link in the navigation bar on the left. That will load the chat window. You should see a window that shows you all of the current messages and allows you to type in messages of your own.
If you are having problems with the chat, click the Chat Help link in the upper right corner. Be aware that the chat program will probably only work with the most recent browsers (Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6.0, and Netscape 6.1 and above). Also, your browser must be configured to run java programs. People have had lots of troubles getting chat to work in the past, so if you can't seem to get it to work, you are not alone.
After signing in to Yahoogroups, go into Account Info. From there, click on Edit which is in the first yellow strip with the heading Member Information. Change your primary address. At this point, I thought this was all I had to do! Wrong. Be sure to click finished to get out of Account Information.
At this point, if you click on My Preferences, you should be showing both email addresses (new and old) under email addresses.
Get out of My Preferences, and go to My Groups. At the top (under the header Yahoo! Groups) you will see View Activity Summary / Edit Delivery Options. Click on Edit Delivery Options.
From here, you can see which address your list mail is going. Click on the down arrow and you should be able to choose which email address you want your email to go. Don't forget to click Save Changes.
You can now go back to My Preferences and remove your old email address. Click on Edit next to the header Email Addresses, then Remove which will be across from your old address. Click Confirm. And that should be the end of that.
I can see why it appears to be easier to simply unsubscribe and resubscribe instead going through all these steps!! I don't know why you can't just change it under Account Info and be done. Very confusing to say the least!
(Thank you to Melissa for these instructions.)
Hearts & Flowers showers are coordinated outpourings of sympathy, congratulations, and caring, usually in the form of small gift blocks. The Hearts & Flowers coordinators sends H&F shower announcements to those on the membership list, who can then decide to participate or not. Blocks will usually be 6" (finished) squares with a heart or flower theme. In the past we have conducted H&F showers for a new baby, a death in the family, a move across the country, and a move across the world, among other things.A more complete description of the Hearts and Flowers showers, as well as how to participate or request a shower, is available in the swaps section of this site.
Check the current list of all swaps, which lists swap information, guidelines, and who is hosting.
One of our major annual swaps, the Washington state block swap is a block exchange of blocks made up of things that "mean Washington" to members. The swap starts at the end of spring and allows for 4 months to construct blocks and mail them to the hostesses. For more information, look at the WASIQ swaps list or email one of the hostesses (or ask the group).
Get in contact with the person hosting the particular swap, listed on the current list of all swaps page. Be aware that almost all swaps have deadlines for sign up and completion, and you might have to wait until the next round to join in.
Just open up the wasiq group site,
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wa-state-quilters/
It does not take effect immediately, so you will still continue to receive emails for a little while.
- Click on the Edit My Membership link.
- Now select the radio button next to "No email" (to turn email off) or whichever mail choice you want
- Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click the Save Changes button
- You should see a screen saying your membership has been updated.
This could be caused by a variety of things, but reason #1 is probably that Yahoo is not working and no one is receiving any group mail. This happens at least once a month. To verify if this is the problem, go to the WASIQ website. Are there any postings listed there in the last few hours, or very few? Are there posts from other people saying they've received no mail? That's your clue. This problem resolves itself in anywhere from a few hours to a couple days. You can send email to Yahoo if you want, but every letter has been ignored.Another common problem is that your email account might be bouncing. This can happen if your mailbox is too full, if your ISP flakes out, or just because the stars align on that day.
How do you tell? Yahoo doesn't exactly make it easy. You have to look at a special page you probably don't look at often.
How to fix a bounce-mail problem? First, make sure that your email isn't bouncing because your mailbox is full. If you are taking up too much space on your ISP's computers, they will be sending email that will say something like "You have too much mail" or "You have exceeded your allowed disk space" or "You have exceeded your usage quota." If you see any email like that, you need to clean out some of your mail. Either delete some email or archive it to your computer. Read the help menu of your email program for how to do this.
- Open up the wasiq group site,
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wa-state-quilters/- Click on the My Groups link, near the top of the page
- If there is a red Alert message, there is a problem with your email address.
To reactivate your email at Yahoo, go back to that My Groups page mentioned earlier, the one with an Alert at the top. Click on the link next to the alert, and follow the directions. You may need to do a couple of things: I had to both verify my email address and unbounce my email address. Just follow the instructions provided by Yahoo. You want the "Bounce" next to your name to go away, so if you see it there, click on the link and follow the unbounce instructions.
First, you must scan or import your picture to your computer. It must be in a web-readable format. That is, it must end with .jpg (or .jpe), .gif, .tif, or .png. Case does not matter, but if you are having problems, change the extension to lower case.
If you file ends in .bmp you will still be able to upload it, but be aware that anyone using a non-Windows computer will be unable to view your image. Do you have an image that is not .jpg, .jpe or .gif, and you don't know how to change it to one of these formats? Here are some simple instructions on how to change the format of an image on a Windows machine.Once your picture is on your computer, somewhere (e.g. you can open up the file locater, search for your file, and find it), open up the WASIQ yahoo groups site on your web browser. Click the "Photos" link on the left hand side.
If you do not have a photo album:
- Click the "Create Album" button
- This will open a page asking you to name your album and provide some access permissions.
- Type the name of the album in the "Photo Albums" text box.
- Under the "Share Album section, click on the circle next to "Group", so that a small black circle appears next to it. This allows you to share all of your pictures with everyone.
- Click the "Create Album" button at the bottom of the page.
If you already have a photo album:
- Open your photo album by double clicking on the folder. If your folder doesn't appear on the first page, it might be on another page of albums. In that case click the "Show All" link to show all photo albums on one page, then scroll down until you find your album.
Adding a photo:
- Click the "Add Photo" button or "Add photo" link.
- Ignore the "Option 1" section.
- In the "Option 2" section, click on the "Browse..." button. This opens up a file selector. Locate your photo file and click the "Open" button. (Not sure how to use a file selector? Look here for instructions on how to use a file selector in Windows)
- Type in a name and/or description in the "Name:" text box.
- Click the "Upload" button at the bottom of the page.
- You album should appear, along with the photo that you just uploaded. Click on the name of the photo.
- Your photo should appear, and should now be available for everyone to see! One more thing to do: Click on the "Full Size" link just above the photo on the right side. If there is no link, you are finished and you can skip the rest.
- Click on the "Delete full size only" link just above the picture.
- Click the "Confirm Delete" button when the next page loads.
- Now you finished!
Why do we delete the full size image? Because often the full size image is very large. We have a cap on the amount of space we can use for photos. This way people can still view a Screen-size version of your photo, which takes up much less space than a full-size version and your photo is still fairly large.
- First, you must login with the same Yahoo ID that you used to post the picture. Most people are automatically signed in with their regular Yahoo ID, although you often need to enter your password. If you are signed in with the wrong ID, click the "Sign Out" link, then the "Sign In" link and login with the correct ID.
- Open the wa-state-quilters yahoo group site.
- Click on the Photos link on the left hand side.
- Find your photo album and click on it.
- There should be a little checkbox next to all of the pictures that you have posted. Check the box next to the picture you want to delete.
- Click on the Delete button on the same page, on the right hand side.
- A confirmation page will appear. Click the "Confirm Delete" button.
- The photo has now been removed from the Yahoo website.
First, go to the Yahoo group site. In the right hand corner is a title bar reading "Membership." Click on "Edit My Membership", just below that title bar.
A new page will load. In the section "Message Delivery," click on the button that expresses which option you would like.
Now click the "Save Changes" button at the bottom. The website will then let you know that you modified these options successfully.
I use a method of judicious deletion. Your mileage may vary.
Some people prefer to receive digests, or 20-mail-message chunks. Yahoo will wait until 20 messages have been posted and send them to you all in one email. Other people prefer to receive no email at all and read all messages from the website. This is a handy option if you happen to be going out of town and you don't want your mailbox overstuffed when you return.
We have an annual retreat held in Leavenworth in the summer each year. We also have smaller retreats throughout the year. Watch for emails and check the Calendar for dates and locations.
Send Carrie Griffin (cgriffin@oz.net) an email.
Check the membership list, or just post to the list asking for that person's email address.
Write up a reasonable set of guidelines for your swap and send them to Joann Uecker. She approves all the swaps and will help you out. It's a good idea to troll for interest on the group first, before going through with writing up guidelines.
Contact the hostess for the exchange, listed on the List of WASIQ exchanges.
First, this list will NEVER transmit computer viruses. Email attachments are not allowed on this list, and that is the only way to send computer viruses by email. However, you might receive a virus from another member on the list, who happens to have your email address. Some viruses use mail in your mailbox as a starting point. If you receive a piece of mail with the [wa-state-quilters] marker in the subject line, but it has an attachment, IT WAS NOT SENT FROM THE LIST. NEVER open unknown attachments, even if it is from someone you know. I suggest you only ever open attachments that you know are coming (ask people to send you an email saying that they are sending an attachment). Also, make sure your mailing program is set to not automatically open attachments.
Please, please, please, do everyone a big favor before sending it to the list and check out story on a virus information site or Urban Legend site. We already know about all the dangers of saccharin, how congress is going to start taxing every email, and how the FBI invades your privacy and can read all your email without permission (although they have to have a warrant to open postal mail) (this one about the FBI is true, by the way.)
Passing on false virus alerts can sometimes do more damage than a real virus, so please be careful and check things out before posting.
That's great, but this mailing list may not be used for commercial purposes, and ESPECIALLY not the membership list. It is fine to let us know what you are doing, but please do not solicit or sell on the mailing list.
Check out the WASIQ list of quilting terms & abbreviations, or ask the list. It's ok, we were all new at some time.
Many of us can't make it to retreats and so often we'll arrange a cyber retreat. Usually it's over a weekend, and we have projects, classes, lottos, and recipe sharing all weekend long! It's a chance for us to get together, if only virtually, and quilt and share.
P.S.: during a cyber retreat mailing list mail gets very heavy, and if this is a problem for you, you might want to set your email settings to no-mail during this time.
Every month a block and color scheme are chosen by the lotto hostess. You make up as many blocks as you like and send them to the hostess. One block == one chance. At the end of a month, she draws a name of the winner, and that person gets all of the blocks. For more information, and the current lotto block for the month, see the list of exchanges.
