As we get closer to the deadline for the Washington State Swap, questions are bound to arise. Most of them can be answered by checking the guidelines, which are posted in the shared files and at the wasiq website, but here are some Qs and As that come up a lot.
Oh, that sounds like fun! Can I join?
Yes, as long as you are a member of the WASIQ mailing list. Signups are happening NOW! See the Guidelines for information on how to sign up. This is an annual swap and the specifications change very little from year to year.
How many blocks can I make?
You can make up to 40 blocks, and you must make a minimum of 5 blocks. The number of blocks you send is the number you will get back, so be sure to make an extra for yourself to keep!
When do the blocks have to be in?
This year's blocks must be received by Sue Bechtold no later than September 25. Blocks which do not arrive in time cannot be swapped.
What's the siggie square? Should I sign my blocks?
You do not have to include a separate signature square, but you need to identify your blocks in some way. Put an address label on the back, sign the block in a seam allowance on the back, or write your signature on a separate square and baste or safety-pin it to the block. Please do not sign the blocks on the front. DO NOT USE STRAIGHT PINS. The swap committee will be handling over a thousand blocks and do not need stuck fingers.
Can I paper piece?
Yes. Please remove the paper, though.
Can I machine embroider a block?
You may use machine embroidery as part of the block construction. Use the embroidery as the center of a simple pieced block or just frame it with another appropriate fabric.
How do I send this?
When you are ready to mail your blocks, look Sue's address up in the membership mailing list or contact Sue to get it. Pack your blocks in a Ziploc bag with your name and address on it. You will need two envelopes. Address one to yourself and the other to Sue. Find out the postage for the whole package, and use stamps to put the correct amount on the self addressed envelope. You cannot use meter strips for the return envelope. Place these in the envelope addressed to Sue and mail.
