A note on "Quilt Trees"/Charm Exchanges

Please don't send me mail inviting me to join a "quilt tree" exchange.

The usual invitation email reads something like this (used without permission):

I'd mail you two 6" fabric squares and in return you mail two 6" squares to the next person on the list and in addition you give a copy of the letter along with two more squares to six fellow quilters after adding your name to the list. It says that everyone that participates should receive 72 squares

Point 1: This is better known as a pyramid scheme, so named because whoever is at the top of the pyramid (the initiator) receives all of the goods, and everyone on the bottom of the pyramid only contribute to the top and receive nothing. Pyramid schemes are illegal in the United States.

Point 2: Let's stop to think about this a minute, shall we? If each of us sends off two squares, then where are those other 70 going to come from? Someone will lose out here, and someone will win big. Such as the person at the top of the list.

Point 3: These are also known as chain letters, which are also illegal in the United States and can get your internet account deleted if your ISP finds out that you are sending them.
